This glossary will help future teachers to learn more vocabulary about education.

- An award conferred by a college or university signifying that the recipient has satisfactorily completed a course of study.
- Example: He earned his academic degree at Princeton.

- academic institution
- noun
- Academic institution is an educational institution dedicated to education and research, which grants academic degrees.
- Example: The University of Birmingham will be the first academic institution in Britain to offer a degree course in golf.

- active learning
- noun
- Active learning is an approach to instruction that involves actively engaging students with the course material through discussions, problem solving, case studies, role plays and other methods.
- Example: The results underscore the importance of an instructional approach that encourages active learning.

- noun
- A course (via lectures or correspondence) for adults who are not otherwise engaged in formal study.
- Example: In order to learn the basics of a program such as Adobe Photoshop, look for adult education classes in your area that may offer such a course for a reasonable price.

- aims and objectives
- noun
- Aims are statements of intent. They are usually written in broad terms. They set out what you hope to achieve at the end of the project. Objectives, on the other hand, should be specific statements that define measurable outcomes, what steps will be taken to achieve the desired outcome.
- Example: The aims and objectives are listed, as are the evaluation methods throughout the project.

- alternative education
- noun
- A school or program maintained and operated by a local or regional board of education that is offered to students in a nontraditional educational setting and addresses the social, emotional, behavioral and academic needs of such students.
- Example: Making the decision to place a child in an alternative school can be difficult and involves a number of factors.

- apprenticeship
- noun
- An arrangement in which someone learns an art, trade, or job under another.
- Example: He obtained an apprenticeship with a carpenter.

- noun
- Art education refers to learning, instruction and programming based upon the visual and tangible arts. Art education includes performing arts like dance, music, theater, and visual arts like drawing, painting, sculpture, and design works.
- Example: One reason is the greatly increased attention paid to art education in the schools.

- The evaluation or estimation of the nature, quality, or ability of someone or something.
- Example: I have an assessment this week.

- asynchronous learning
- noun
- Asynchronous learning happens on your schedule. While your course of study, instructor, or program will provide materials for reading, lectures for viewing, assignments for completing, and exams for evaluation, you can access and satisfy these requirements on your own schedule, so long as you meet the expected deadlines.
- Example: The courses for education programs that were taught online were delivered through an asynchronous learning network and had a prescribed schedule for completion of the coursework.

- bilingual education
- noun
- Bilingual education is a term that refers to the teaching of academic content in two languages, in a native and second language. Varying amounts of each language are used depending on the outcome goal of the model.
- Example: There are numerous approaches to bilingual education, although all include English as a second language (ESL).

- A school providing lodging and meals for the pupils.
- Example: She sent her son to a boarding school in the East.

- brainstorming
- noun
- Brainstorming is a method design teams used to generate ideas to solve clearly defined design problems. In controlled conditions and a free-thinking environment, teams approach a problem by such means as “How Might We” questions. They produce a vast array of ideas and draw links between them to find potential solutions.
- Example: One of the best ways to approach coming up with name ideas for your company is to engage in a brainstorming session with your business partners (if applicable) and/or other trusted individuals.

- Chemistry education

- Chemistry education (or chemical education) is the study of the teaching and learning of chemistry in all schools, colleges and universities.
- Example: This year, chemistry education is one of my favourite classes to teach.

- Classroom management refers to the wide variety of skills and techniques that teachers use to keep students organized, orderly, focused, attentive and academically productive during a class.
- Example: Only late in the day did we understand that classroom management skills were vital to an understanding of how to regulate and manage behaviour.

- The basic level of practical knowledge and judgment that we all need to help us live in a reasonable and safe way.
- Example: You really should go to see a doctor if your leg hurts that much. It's just common sense!

- noun
- A community of practice is a group of people who share a common concern, a set of problems, or an interest in a topic and who come together to fulfill both individual and group goals.
- Example: Many communities of practice rely on face-to-face meetings as well as web-based collaborative environments to communicate, connect and conduct community activities.

- A set of classes or a plan of study on a particular subject, usually leading to an exam or qualification.
- Example: I passed off my English and advanced French before I entered college, and I choose the courses I like best.

- noun
- Critical pedagogy is a philosophy of education and social movement that developed and applied concepts from critical theory and related traditions to the field of education and the study of culture.
- Example: The philosophy of problem-posing education is the foundation of modern critical pedagogy.

- noun
- The objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment.
- Example: The purpose is to share ways of spreading critical thinking to others.
